More and more young women affected by STIs

In 10 years, cases of chlamydia have doubled and the trend of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) is unfortunately continually growing. 60% of all cases involve women, in particular women over 55. In the over 50s this rise has been attributed greater promiscuity and the availability of Potenzstärkende Mittel . These are just some of the data of the first report of the European Centre for Diseases Control (ECDC) presented a few days ago, and information which should make us stop and take stock of the situation. In Europe there are about 334,000 reported cases of chlamydia alone, an infection that if left untreated can have very serious complications.

In most cases chlamydia presents no symptoms, but this silent disease can quickly spread through the body. If chlamydia reaches the fallopian tubes it can cause pelvic inflammation and even infertility. Whilst cases of chlamydia have continued to rise, the data collected shows a slight decrease in cases of gonorrhoea and syphilis. Gonorrhoea and syphilis are diseases that are more common in men. Unfortunately, as experts explain, the ratio of the ECDC does not take into account all venereal diseases, for example genital warts and herpes, which are also on the rise.

The weapons available to combat these diseases mainly affect younger people (between 15 and 24) exist. The first step is prevention, in particular in summer and on holiday, when it is easier to have the occasional sexual fling. During the holiday period experts strongly advise using a condom to protect from unwanted pregnancies and above all sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia, as well as AIDS and hepatitis!

Secondly, if you suspect you may have a sexually transmitted infection it is important that a diagnosis be made as soon as possible. You should never overlook symptoms of any kind and it is important to talk with your doctor if you have had unprotected sex. Specific diagnostic tests can allow proper treatment.
